Propecia (finasteride) is the only FDA-approved treatment for male hair loss. It can be used in the treatment of two hair loss patterns: on the top of the head and on the anterior mid-scalp area.
Results of Propecia use vary, but for most men, it increases the number of hairs in the first 12 months of treatment and helps create thicker hair in the balding areas. Results may be visible in as little as 3 months. In addition, it may help slow hair loss.
Propecia is approved for use by adult men only. It has not been shown to have any effect on female postmenopausal hair loss and should not be used by women. Propecia is currently available by prescription only.
